Director, Integrated Marketplace Solutions

Reporting to the VP, Integrated Marketplace, the Director of Integrated Marketplace Solutions is responsible for establishing and maintaining a network of technology and innovation solution providers to support the identification and testing of solutions at Marketplace test beds. The Solutions Director is required to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the tech sector in B.C., keep abreast of technologies related to testbed sectors, possess excellent negotiation and influence skills, and support current and potential solutions providers to be aware of Marketplace opportunities and the processes for matching technologies to business needs.

Compensation: up to $133,000 plus benefits.
Location: British Columbia with at least 1 day a week in Vancouver.  
Employment Type: Full-Time. 3-year contract. 

About the Integrated Marketplace

The Integrated Marketplace (the Marketplace) spurs and streamlines commercial adoption and scale up of innovative technology related to greenhouse gas reduction, increasing efficiency/productivity and ensuring safety. The Marketplace is led by Innovate BC and funded by the Province of British Columbia.   

The purpose of the Marketplace is to drive the adoption and scale up of innovation by aggregating demand through business alliances, and testing solutions at identified ‘test beds’ in the province. This model is intended to prove innovation at scale and secure domestic customers for innovation solution providers while de-risking the adoption of innovation for business.  

 

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the VP, Integrated Marketplace, the Director of Integrated Marketplace Solutions is responsible for establishing and maintaining a network of technology and innovation solution providers to support the identification and testing of solutions at Marketplace test beds. The Solutions Director is required to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the tech sector in B.C., keep abreast of technologies related to testbed sectors, possess excellent negotiation and influence skills, and support current and potential solutions providers to be aware of Marketplace opportunities and the processes for matching technologies to business needs.

The successful candidate will establish and maintain strategic relationships with existing and prospective technology solutions providers for the Marketplace and will work closely with the Integrated Marketplace Alliance Manager and the Vice President, Integrated Marketplace to effectively match, integrate, and test solutions for business needs identified by the test bed Alliances (i.e., a group of stakeholder companies working in the same or similar site or sector who share common business and decarbonization goals). 

 

Responsibilities

Business Development  

  • Establishes and maintains relationships within the BC technology, innovation and research community to facilitate the matching of BC solutions to identified business needs of Alliances at test beds.  
  • Ensures a detailed inventory of solution providers and potential capabilities is maintained and accessible by team members. 
  • Leads negotiations with and amongst prospective solutions providers to find existing or emerging solutions for identified Alliance business needs at test beds.  
  • Develops and leads calls for proposals and other in-take processes that allow eligible solution providers to be considered by the Marketplace.   
  • Develops strategic partnerships to achieve the goals of the Marketplace (i.e., the adoption and scale up of innovation by BC business). 
  • Proactively identifies risks and issues and mitigates them appropriately.
  • Develops and maintains the processes for marketing opportunities, identifying and matching prospective solutions to business needs, in some cases integrating components from multiple solutions providers, and effectively testing the solutions in real-world market conditions.

Manage the Network of Solutions Providers 

  • Establishes and maintains a network of BC technology and innovation companies (i.e., solutions providers).  
  • Negotiates with prospective solutions providers to facilitate integrated solutions (i.e., the merging of multiple solutions to satisfy business needs). 
  • Builds a process and manages a network of developing innovations and capabilities within the post-secondary sector.  
  • Develops and maintains business processes related to marketing opportunities, identifying and evaluating prospective solutions, integrating components, and testing solutions at test beds (including determining success parameters for testing). 
  • Establishes and manages the framework for evaluating solutions. 
  • Works with the Integrated Marketplace Operations (IMO) team to identify experts that will form an evaluation panel that can help assess the efficacy of a solution to a defined problem.
  • Supports the evaluation panel to evaluate and select solutions using determined evaluation metrics.
  • Works with the VP, Integrated Marketplace and other IMO team members to bring recommended solutions to the Integrated Marketplace Steering Committee for approval and funding. 
  • Works with the Integrated Marketplace Alliance Director to negotiate project conditions, costs and parameters between the Alliance, the test bed, and the identified solution provider(s).
  • Monitors testing of solutions and reports on results to the VP, Integrated Marketplace and the Integrated Marketplace Steering Committee.
  • Works with all Marketplace parties to ensure projects are delivered on schedule and on budget and supports the development team in all areas as needed.
  • Works with other IMO team members to facilitate awards to the successful solution(s) and manages agreements to initiate projects to test solutions.
  • Works with solution providers to facilitate the completion of data sharing and foreground IP agreements as needed. 
  • Develops final reports and summary documents on initiatives for solution providers. 
  • Ensures that solution provider reporting requirements are completed within established timelines  

People Management  

  • Contributes to the development and employee awareness of Innovate BC’s mission, values and goals. 
  • Leads, coaches and supervises staff and contractors including assignment of work, development and evaluation of performance plans, approval of leave, response to grievances and initiation of discipline processes. 
  • Provides ongoing feedback, conducts annual performance evaluations for direct reports, and implements performance improvement plans as necessary.  
    • Participates in performance improvement initiatives.  
    • Holds staff rigorously accountable for achieving their objectives.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in program and service delivery in the public sector. The broad complexity and scope of this position require managing multiple stakeholders and interests. 
  • Post-secondary degree in a STEM or technology-related field, including computer science, business administration, mechanical engineering, or related discipline and program administration experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in a management capacity in the technology sector or related area in non-profit, private or public sectors. 
  • Experience within and knowledge of the technology and innovation community, preferably in BC.  
  • Experience in project management, including establishing scope, resources, and timelines for projects, and managing projects through to successful completion.   
  • Proven experience in establishing and maintaining a professional network to achieve business outcomes.  
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent negotiation skills. 
  • Action-oriented, flexible and innovative expert in stakeholder management.
