Programs Assistant

Innovate BC is a crown agency of the Province of British Columbia with a mandate to help strengthen entrepreneurship development, increase company growth, and support job creation, ensuring the benefits of technology and innovation are felt around the province, including rural, northern, and indigenous communities. 


Innovate BC is a team of less than 20 people. We work closely together to support the innovation and technology sector in BC. We are temporarily working remotely due to COVID-19.

The Programs Department delivers programs with key stakeholder groups including government, industry and technology companies. The Programs Assistant works with a team focused on programs that support hiring grants for tech companies and other activities that support the development of talent in BC’s innovation and technology sector.


The Programs Assistant role is an exciting opportunity for a co-op student who would like to strengthen their program management skills while gaining knowledge of BC’s innovation and technology sector.

Reporting to the Director of Programs and working with the Programs Manager, Programs Specialist and 3 additional Programs Assistants, this role provides critical support in the delivery of specific Innovate BC funding programs and participates in the design, delivery, development and evaluation of funding programs. The role requires a balance of technical skills as well as the ability to manage administrative tasks.  


  • Participates in the development of Program evaluation criteria, reviews and revises reporting forms and related materials, evaluates processes and timelines and provides input into the development of Program promotional materials. 
  • Assists in the improvement of Program processes related to online grant management platforms. 
  • Using grant management software, creates and analyzes Program data reports. 
  • Assists in the implementation of Program grant disbursements. 
  • Initiates, develops and maintains effective working relationships with Program funders and support agencies and provides regular Program information, statistics and reports. 
  • Promotes Programs to clients and potential clients through attending meetings, industry associations, academic institutions, economic development offices and others in formal and informal settings, attending trade shows, technical conferences and workshops and initiates other promotional activities in conjunction with communications staff and other departments. 
  • Provides advice, information and assistance to applicants and potential applicants regarding specific Programs and referring to other programs and agencies. 
  • Monitors and audits ongoing projects to ensure compliance with policies and standards as well as formal Project Agreements by reviewing and approving disbursement requests and budget changes, reviewing financial statements and reports. 
  • Identifies actual or potential project problems and takes corrective action as required; prepares project reports and provides ongoing information to Innovate BC management and external sponsors and funders. 
  • Provides background information regarding clients and programs to Innovate BC staff and others. 
  • Conducts special studies, makes presentations and participates in internal and external committee work relating to the areas of responsibility. 
  • Performs other related duties as required. 


  • Post-secondary degree in business with administration experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience working with online information management systems in an asset. 
  • Strong planning, organizational, analytical and administrative skills. 
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple activities while maintaining attention to detail. 
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions regarding the progress of projects and disbursement of funds based on guidelines and standards. 
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with peers, clients, funding providers, volunteers, external officials and the public. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office software, particularly Word and Excel
  • Candidates are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as condition of employment. As such applicants who receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to provide proof of full vaccination with a Health Canada approved vaccine prior to the commencement of employment. This is a full-time 6-month contract, with an anticipated start date of February 24, 2022 or sooner.


$18-$22 / hour
