Controller

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Controller to join our team. The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial activities related to historical financial reporting within the organization. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, robust internal controls, and compliance with government regulations. Key responsibilities include managing the annual external audit, maintaining the general ledger, preparing payroll, supporting the internal controls program, treasury management, and ensuring proper insurance coverage. Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Controller will focus on preparing and submitting government reports and developing relationships with key stakeholders to support compliance and financial integrity. This role emphasizes detailed financial management and operational finance to maintain Innovate BC’s (IBC) fiscal health.

Compensation: $90,000 - $110,000 
Reporting to: Director, Finance 
Location: Vancouver, BC 
Work Arrangement: Hybrid role with a requirement to work in-office at least 2 days per week 
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-time

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Business Execution:
Financial Reporting:

  • Oversee the full-cycle accounting process
  • Prepare internal monthly financial statements on a timely and accurate basis
  • Maintain the general ledger and underlying software system to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data
  • Oversee the year-end audit process, including preparing financial statements and providing information to auditors
  • Prepare various government reports as needed, including the Financial Information Act report
  • Ensure that any financial information in the annual service plan is complete and accurate
  • Serve as the point person for financial aspects of the organization for government submissions
  • Prepare payroll and benefit program submissions and reporting
  • Manage processes related to day-to-day corporate banking, including managing IBC funds to optimize efficiency and investment returns and reconciling investment statements

Internal Controls and Enterprise Risk Management:

  • Support the design, testing, monitoring, and reporting of IBC's internal controls program
  • Ensure that finance policies are implemented and reviewed for updates on an annual basis
  • Act as the point person for all insurance requirements, working with the insurance broker to ensure that IBC has appropriate and cost-effective insurance coverage

Data Analysis and System Implementation:

  • Gather and analyze data, produce reports, share insights, and provide recommendations
  • Support the implementation of required software systems

Leadership and Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture
  • Work with other departments and business units to provide financial guidance and support
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination within the team and across departments to ensure alignment on financial goals and initiatives

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be a designated CPA with a degree or diploma in accounting or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • A minimum of five years’ progressive full-cycle accounting experience
  • Experience with Public Sector Accounting Standards, especially on Government Transfers, is an asset

  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with peers and external stakeholders
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Excel, and MS Office software

Working Conditions

  • IBC is a hybrid organization and requires employees to work in-office at least 2 days per week. IBC is headquartered in Vancouver, BC with a satellite office in Victoria, BC
  • Limited travel may be required
