Creating online courses is easy with Vancouver-based Thinkific

Written by Innovate BC | September 3, 2019

Thinkific allows anyone to create, market, and sell their own online courses. Their mission is to revolutionize the way people and businesses learn and earn online. Thinkific’s powerful all-in-one platform makes it easy for individuals and organizations to share their knowledge, grow their audiences, and scale the businesses they already love.

Through Innovate BC’s Tech Co-op Grant Program, Thinkific was able to secure $5,400 in funding to hire Roxy, a UBC Science Co-op student. Roxy joined Thinkific for two co-op terms, first as a Junior Quality Assurance Analyst during a growth period for the company. Soon after her arrival, Roxy quickly began  and advanced into a junior engineer role in her second work term. Seeing Roxy’s progression and impact, the team at Thinkific recognized the talented young developer and brought her on as a full-time engineer where she continues to help the company make an impact through their online education platform.

We asked Tia Fomenoff, Director of People and Culture at Thinkific, to share their thoughts on the Tech Co-op Grant program, the value it has brought to the company, and what exciting things are on the horizon.

Q: What made the Tech Co-op Grant program stand out from other options?

Tia: Innovate BC’s Tech Co-op Grant stood out to us because of how easily and quickly we could apply. Our team has struggled in the past with grants because of long, complicated processes that make it harder than it should be to access resources that can help us support young talent looking to enter the tech workforce.

Q: What’s the main reason you would recommend the Tech Co-op Grant Program?

Tia: We would recommend the Tech Co-op Grant Program because of the incredible talent it has allowed us to connect with and the great support—whenever we had questions [Innovate BC] was quick to respond and help us. One of our core values is Learn and Grow, so we love seeing the thirst for knowledge that co-op students have, as well as how our co-ops have taken advantage of the learning opportunities they’ve had at Thinkific.

Q: What are some company milestones you’re most looking forward to in the year ahead? Or are there any recent successes you’d like to talk about?

Tia: We’ve recently launched Thinkific Plus, which is designed to make online education at scale simple.

Thinkific has always focused on serving the SMB and solopreneur market, and while we’d never want to shift our focus away from small businesses, mid-sized companies share many of the same core technology needs as our current audience. Thinkific Plus lets us continue our core focus on solopreneurs and small businesses, while giving high-volume Thinkific users what they need from the platform as they scale.

It’s an exciting time to be at Thinkific - we’ve grown quickly over the past couple of years and we’re looking forward to continuing on that trajectory! We’re currently on track to cross the 100 team member mark by the end of the year, and we’re looking for incredible people to join us across all of our departments.
