Knowing and leveraging intellectual property is an essential part of every innovator journey. An effective IP strategy helps you not only protect your idea but strengthens your business strategy and can set you up for meaningful growth.
Developed in alignment with the Province of British Columbia’s Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy, Innovate BC’s IP Hub platform is a centralized, one-stop destination for relevant and dynamic IP resources tailored to the needs of B.C. entrepreneurs – from understanding what IP is and why it’s important, to managing it and aligning it with your business strategy, you can find it in the Hub.
By creating an IP Hub account, users can access a wide range of IP resources, including training programs, funding opportunities, and events. These offerings are intended to help organizations build a strong foundation for their IP strategy, execute it effectively, and gain practical insights that support informed decision-making, enhance competitiveness, and unlock the full value of innovation.
And now with the new Individual Assessment Tool, users can understand where they’re at with IP and get the grasp they need to confidently start on building their own IP strategy.
Learn more about the new Individual Assessment Tool, how to use it, and where it fits in with the Hub’s Organizational Assessment Tool below.
Assessment Tools
To support B.C. innovators, the IP Hub offers two complementary assessment tools, each serving a distinct purpose:
- Individual Assessment Tool
Designed for individuals who are new to IP or seeking to enhance their knowledge, this tool assesses understanding of key IP concepts, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and other fundamentals. It identifies knowledge gaps and highlights areas for improvement, while offering personalized learning recommendations and resources to support skill development and overall business readiness.- Organizational Assessment Tool
This tool assesses an organization’s overall IP readiness, knowledge, and practices. It helps determine the current level of IP maturity while identifying strengths, gaps, and opportunities for growth. As a starting point for developing or refining an IP strategy, it provides tailored recommendations, including relevant learning and training resources aligned with the organization’s needs and long-term goals.
Note: It is recommended that only one Organizational Assessment be complete per organization. However, organizations are encouraged to retake the assessment as they make progress and evolve to a higher level of maturity.
Completing both assessments is highly valuable, as they work together to support a continuous improvement journey at both the organizational and individual levels. By engaging with both tools, users can move from awareness to action by gaining a clearer understanding of their IP landscape while identifying practical steps to strengthen and grow their capabilities over time.
How to Use the Assessment Tools
